Trench warfare bases: trenches and mud

In the trench warfare theme, Base Forge makes grim, muddy bases and base toppers in First World War style – for trench war tabletop wargames. Every seed gives a unique base at 1:56 scale, as a complete base with sockets for 6 mm magnets or as a topper for round 25 to 60 mm bases and oval 60 × 30 mm bases.

  • Full base or topper: the complete base at full size (4 mm high, hollow underneath, sockets for 6 × 2 mm magnets) or just the topper to glue onto bases you already have.
  • Mud: muddy ground with an earth mound or shell crater, puddles, stones and boot prints – the model can stand anywhere.
  • Trench: plank floor, earth wall and sandbags on one side, with a flat standing area for the model.
  • Extras: spent casings of various calibres with magazines from both world wars and artillery shell casings, First World War and crusader helmets, skulls and bones.

Printing and painting trench bases

Which size?

Round 25 and 32 mm for infantry, 40 mm for heavier models, 50 and 60 mm for large models, oval 60 × 30 mm for long models. On the oval base the trench is a plank floor without a wall. "Full base" gives a ready base with magnet sockets, otherwise you get the topper to glue on.

Printing

Resin brings out the wood grain, the casings and the dents in the helmets best. FDM works too: every base is one solid piece with no hidden cavities and no overhangs that need supports; helmet shells are 0.65 mm thick. Use a fine nozzle and a low layer height.

Painting

Prime dark, then drybrush the mud in earth tones and the planks in grey-brown to bring out the grain. The puddles in the mud are perfectly level – ideal for gloss varnish or water effects. Casings in brass, helmets in dull steel or rust.

Frequently asked questions

Which base sizes are supported?

Round 25, 32, 40, 50 and 60 mm, plus oval 60 × 30 mm (some scenes look a little different on the oval base). As a full base, the STL has exactly this size. As a topper it is slightly smaller (24.1 / 29.8 / 37.9 / 47.5 / 59.5 mm, oval 55.8 × 29 mm) so it sits neatly on top of an existing base without overhanging.

Does the scale match my miniatures?

All scenes and extras are designed at 1:56 scale, which suits common 28 mm tabletop wargame miniatures.

Which games do the bases fit?

Base Forge is not tied to any particular game: make the bases you like – theme, scene, size and extras combine freely. They fit any tabletop wargame with round 25 to 60 mm or oval 60 × 30 mm bases and 28 mm miniatures, whether infantry, heroes, monsters or cavalry.

What is the best way to print the STL?

A resin printer works best for fine details such as wood grain, cobblestones, seams and small extras. An FDM printer works too, ideally with a fine nozzle and a low layer height, but small details will come out coarser. Everything is built to print without supports.

How do I attach the base, topper and model?

The full base is ready to use: glue 6 × 2 mm magnets into the sockets underneath, prime and paint. Glue the topper onto an existing base with superglue.

Where does the model stand?

Every scene leaves room for your miniature: a flat, free area to glue it on always stays clear. Walls, ramparts and larger extras only sit at the edge or on one side – never where the model stands.

What does the seed do?

The seed is the number the randomness is calculated from. The same scene, size, seed and extras always give the same base, so you can recreate a base you like or share its seed. Leave it empty to roll a random one.

Can I sell the STL files?

You are free to use, print and paint the generated STLs for personal use. Selling the files or prints is not allowed.

Will there be more themes?

Yes – Base Forge keeps growing: every theme brings its own scenes and extras, and more worlds will follow. New scenes appear automatically in the tab of their theme.
